Hope Mills has fantastic schools and is considered a much quieter alternative to living in Fayetteville. Gray’s Creek is raved about for the community feel, quality of homes, and generally family friendly vibe.

This area is very convenient to I-95 so if you plan to travel south frequently, this is your spot. You’re also close to the Fayetteville Regional Airport and Downtown Fayetteville.

The homes are considered to be very affordable here, which is great if you’re looking for a starter home or an investment property.

Things to Consider

The Hope Mills Lake was once a main attraction and its dam powered the mills. However, the dam failed in 2003 thus draining the lake. The empty lakebed remained an eyesore until 2010 when the dam was repaired and the lake was refilled, only to suffer another catastrophic setback when a sinkhole destroyed the new dam. The town is still working on repairing the dam and refilling the lake and that will definitely help with property values and recreation opportunities!

Even though you feel like you’re out in the country, you’ll still be paying Cumberland County taxes and insurance rates.

The commute is reasonable at roughly 30 to 45 minutes, but for Fort Bragg standards, it’s considered a hike. If you’re commuting to the north side of post (Pope Field), you may be looking at a drive that is 45 minutes or longer.

Home Values are forecasted to increase by 4.3% in the coming year.

School Scoop

Fayetteville contains 80 primary and secondary schools. Public schools in Fayetteville are in Cumberland County Schools and the district as a whole has been given a 5 by GreatSchools.org. South View High School is rated a 4 by GreatSchools.org. Most parents try to either live in the preferable Gray’s Creek High School zone or apply to choice into it from South View.

In North Carolina, children can attend their neighborhood schools or charter schools. Low-income students are eligible for scholarship funding to attend private schools. Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” (there are several in Cumberland County) have the right to attend a higher performing school in the district.

Cumberland County has Choice Programs at many schools and they are highly sought after. A Choice School emphasizes a particular interest (arts, foreign language, science, etc.) and integrates that subject matter throughout all of the academics a student is presented. You may apply to a choice school even if you don’t reside in that zone, but the application/admission would need to be renewed yearly. There are also Choice Academies available at area high schools for students interested in a particular career field.
