Seventy-First

About

Seventy-First High School serves the zone just south of Fort Bragg and adjacent to the Hoke County line. Highway 401, or Raeford Road, passes directly through this area and most of the traffic is concentrated on that strip. Primarily residential, the residents here do have access to a few small stores, restaurants, and a couple of Wal-Marts. Most people typically travel to other parts of the city for work and play. There’s still a good bit of undeveloped land with lakes and ponds scattered throughout, so we’ll be keeping an eye on future developments.

Neighbors

This area is made up of a mix of military and civilian, but the poorly-rated schools prompt most military families to look elsewhere. Single servicemen and geographic bachelors might consider this area if they are looking to pocket BAH and are not as concerned with school selection or safety ratings.

Neighborhood Feel

Affordable homes can be found here, but take care to research crime statistics. It’s not recommended to rent or buy sight unseen in this area. For the most part, it’s a fairly quiet locale, with most of the activity and traffic focused around Raeford Road and Cliffdale Road. The residential scene is comprised largely of apartment complexes and small, older homes.

Big Plus

The short commute to Fort Bragg is the primary draw, with the affordability of the homes coming in a close second.

Cumberland County’s highly sought after Chinese language immersion Choice School, New Century International Elementary, is located in this zone. The curriculum begins in Kindergarten with the expectation of bilingual fluency by the time they complete 5th grade. However, the middle schools and high school are rated as less desirable.

Things to Consider

The housing here can be a little less cared for and many spouses recommend against the local schools, but with a little research you might find something that works for your situation.

In North Carolina, children can attend their neighborhood schools or charter schools. Low-income students are eligible for scholarship funding to attend private schools. Cumberland County has Choice Programs at many schools and they are highly sought after. A Choice School emphasizes a particular interest (arts, foreign language, science, etc.) and integrates that subject matter throughout all of the academics a student is presented. You may apply to a choice school even if you don’t reside in that zone, but the application/admission would need to be renewed yearly. There are also Choice Academies available at area high schools for students interested in a particular career field.

New Century International Elementary School is in the Seventy-First school zone and has a highly sought after Mandarin Chinese language immersion program. Applications are still required for acceptance into this program.
