About
Coast Guard Air Station San Diego (CGAS) is one of the many Coast Guard Stations in the Eleventh District. It lies on the beautiful San Diego Bay, adjacent to the San Diego International Airport. CGAS operates three Jayhawk helicopters and supports the Coast Guard’s Small Boat Station San Diego.
In 1935, 23 acres of tideland near Lindbergh Field (the municipal airport) was given to the Coast Guard to aid in protecting this precious California port. During World War II, CGAS San Diego was instrumental in many successful Sea and Rescue (SAR) missions involving downed aircraft in the Pacific Ocean. Today, the station’s mission revolves around recreational boating safety, Maritime Homeland Security, and law enforcement.
